The new Seat Tarraco – a truly great option for the 7 seat SUV grade

The latest manufacturer to join the 7 seat SUV party is Seat with the impressive new Tarraco

From the Volkswagen Audi stable this all new option is based on the same platform / engine and running gear as the ever popular Kodiaq and VW Tiguan All Space.

A familiar body shape is enhanced with a stylish Seat front end incorporating full powerful LED headlights

Most leasing customers will no doubt opt for the 2 wheel drive option as it represents the best overall value for money / economy but if you are worried about losing grip in bad weather, icy conditions or the snow then 4WD is the answer.

4 wheel drive

The clever 4Drive system available in the Tarraco is more than capable on road and really excels off road. Having had the opportunity to take this new model off road I was genuinely surprised and impressed with where this vehicle could go. Superb ground clearance, grip, and power got the Tarraco up and down the most challenging of terrain. With automatic hill descent the car does all the work on tricky downhill sections and when in full off road mode the low range pulls you through and up the muckiest and slipperiest of surfaces. It is truly, truly impressive what this can do.
The 7 seat option is sure to appeal to company car drivers who require a bit more room without having to compromise on style and driving comfort. The Tarraco is a nice place to sit with bags of room inside.

A Rough Guide – from NEDC to WLTP – Vehicle Pricing Changes & How It Affects Companies/Drivers

In brief – from Sept 1st 2018 a new system to measure vehicle Co2 emissions & statistics will be in place and the price of vehicles will change according to the results of these new tests.

The current testing system has been in place since the early 80s (NEDC) and the results of these tests gave us our Co2 readings. The vehicle registration tax (VRT) of a car is based on this Co2 result. The new system (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure WLTP) from September 1st onwards will give us a new set of results based on a more ‘real world‘ testing scenario so the prices of vehicles will change according to their new Co2 readings. The higher the reading the higher the VRT.

The likelihood is that under the new testing regime Co2 readings will be higher across the board and therefore the price of a car will be higher. The recommended retail price (RRP) from the manufacturers will now incorporate a higher VRT amount so the cost of cars will rise.

What does this mean for you?

1. As a driver –

  • The BIK paid is based on the price of the car + annual mileage. Therefore the higher the price of the car the more BIK that is paid
  • E.G. a driver in an early 2018 car that cost Eur35,000 will pay less BIK for the exact same car if it costs more after the 1st of Sept 2018 (yes car prices increase all the time but this is going to be above and beyond normal increases by all indications)
  • Coupled with the standard VRT increase any optional extras added to the vehicle will also now increase the VRT. Their addition will now increase the Co2 reading where it didn’t under the old testing system
  • Under the old test the Co2 readings come from the standard car, options made no difference to the official rating used to calculate VRT. Now under the new test any optional extra will affect the VRT and increase the overall price of the car plus the cost of the actual optional extra. Larger alloy wheels for example increase a car’s Co2 reading. A sunroof adds weight to a car and the heavier the car the more Co2 it puts out
  • Every extra will now incur an extra cost on top of the manufacturers price. eg if a car has an optional extra that on paper costs Eur1200 from the manufacturer, this option will also increase the price of the car by the increase of Co2 it creates

2. As a customer –

  • Vehicle prices will increase across the board and therefore cost companies more to buy or lease
  • As the RRP is higher the cost price will be higher & the monthly payments will increase
  • The vehicles will cost more to tax
  • Certain vehicles will not fit within policy limits
  • Many manufacturers will temporarily cease production of all models or certain models
  • Some models will either require updates to the engines in order to lower their emissions or will go out of production altogether
  • The lead times for new orders from the factory will dramatically increase in length as certain models will have a paused production or have to wait for new WLTP Co2 test results, price changes, VRT increases etc
  • BIK figures will increase for staff in new cars after the 1st of Sept 2018

In summary

  • It is anticipated that the New WLTP testing system will increase vehicle pricing across the board
  • The exact increases are as of yet unknown or available from manufacturers as they have not been released
  • Car ordering will be affected – with long lead times, the potential for no orders being taken or significant price increases possible

Top Tips for Winter Driving with Johnson & Perrott Fleet

Driving safely in winter conditions can be challenging for even the most experienced driver. After months of traveling in mild weather, with longer daylight hours, winter conditions can arrive sooner than expected.

In preparation for the upcoming winter weather(Beast from the East), now is the time for fleet managers to talk to drivers about traveling in winter. Below are some winter driving tips to help make sure fleet drivers stay safe on the roads, whatever the weather.

1. Mobility and journey management

  • First, ask yourself if there is an alternative to road travel. If you must travel, make sure your journey is well planned
  • Check that your planned route is clear
  • Allow extra travel time
  • Ensure others are aware of your journey and your expected time of arrival
  • Check local and national weather updates on television, radio or online

2. Vehicle maintenance

  • Keep your vehicle well maintained/serviced and check you have a good battery. Your battery must work much harder in the winter (working lights and wipers, for example) and can fail completely with hardly any warning
  • Tires must have good tread depth and be inflated correctly (including the spare)
  • Check cooling system contains antifreeze at the correct strength
  • Check windscreen wipers and washers are working properly – in cold temperatures use high strength screen-wash
  • Lights must be clean and working

3. Be prepared if you must set out

  • Check to see if you have a full tank of fuel
  • Let someone know your destination and your expected time of arrival
  • Take a mobile phone if you have one, but remember you could break down in a ‘dead area’, so take warm high visibility clothing, hot drinks, food, boots, a torch and shovel as well – it could be a long walk to a phone
  • Ensure vehicle windows, mirrors and lights are clear from mist, frost and snow. Snow and ice reduce what you can see, and can be dangerous to other road users as it falls off your vehicle

4. Plan your route

  • Use main roads as much as you can
  • Allow extra time for your journey
  • Avoid the rush hour to help reduce congestion

5. Drive with caution

  • Drive according to the conditions
  • Reduce speed in poor visibility, where there is snow, or if ice may have formed
  • Use the highest gear possible to help keep control of the vehicle and avoid harsh braking and acceleration
  • Maintain larger safer stopping distances – three seconds between vehicles is for good conditions! A wet road surface means you’ll take twice as long to stop, so you need to be at least six seconds behind the vehicle in front
  • Use dipped headlights in poor visibility and snow, so others can see you!
  • Use rear fog lights in poor visibility but remember to switch them off when conditions improve
  • Watch out for other road users, including motorbikes, pushbikes, pedestrians and children, who may also be having difficulties in bad conditions

6. Know how to handle a breakdown

  • If you get into trouble, stay with your vehicle if possible, until help arrives
  • If you do have to leave your vehicle, make yourself visible to others
  • If you must abandon your vehicle, give local police the details and park safely to avoid obstruction to maintenance vehicles such as snow ploughs when they are trying to treat the roads

7. Prepare for all conditions

Fog is a danger in autumn and winter, and is a major cause of collisions.

  • Slow down, keep your distance, and turn your lights on in fog
  • Drive very slowly using dipped headlights. Use fog lights if visibility is seriously reduced, but remember to switch them off when visibility improves
  • Don’t hang on the tail lights of the vehicle in front – this gives you a false sense of security and means you may be driving too close
  • Don’t speed up suddenly – even if it seems to be clearing, you can suddenly find yourself back in thick fog

Ice, snow and slush drastically reduce the ability of your tires to grip the road, which means that slowing down, speeding up, or changing direction all become hazardous. The trick to driving in these conditions is to be as smooth as possible.

  • Drive slowly, allowing extra room to slow down and stop
  • It can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road
  • Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin, maneuver gently, and avoid harsh braking and acceleration
  • To brake on ice and snow without locking your wheels, get into a low gear earlier than normal, allow your speed to fall, and use the brake pedal gently
  • If you skid, ease off the accelerator but avoid braking suddenly

Floods. Avoid floodwater completely if you can. If you have no alternative but to enter floodwater:

  • Drive slowly in first gear, but keep the engine speed high by slipping the clutch to stop your vehicle from stalling
  • Drive through the water one vehicle at a time
  • Avoid the deepest water, which is generally near the curb. Don’t attempt to cross if the water seems too deep
  • Test your brakes a few times after you are through the flood before you drive at normal speed

REMEMBER:

  • Give cyclists and motorcyclists extra room in bad weather
  • Dazzle from low winter sun can be dangerous. Carry a pair of sunglasses in the car
  • It takes twice as long to stop on a wet road as it does on a dry one, and up to ten times longer in icy conditions
